A trip to Japan inspired the owners of this century-old Montreal row house to envision the next stage of its life as a modern, light-filled family home. On a narrow lot, with windows concentrated on the building’s front and rear, the architects created an interior awash in natural light through the clever use of slatted “balconies” around an atrium. By removing the building’s rear balconies, meanwhile, the designers were not only able to expand the interior square footage but also to create a basement family room overlooking a dreamy light well and Japanese-inspired rock garden.
