AZ Awards 2024 Finalist: University Park by PUBLIC WORK

Toronto’s University Avenue is also known as Hospital Row: It’s home to the downtown health net-work that is a profound source of pride for the city. Yet this traffic-congested multi-lane boulevard is far from salutogenic. PUBLIC WORK’s vision would change that. University Park would introduce a 36-hectare park through a strategic spatial reorganization that would connect and expand the avenue’s currently disparate green spaces into a vibrant and accessible landscape.

AZ Awards 2024 Finalist: University Park by PUBLIC WORK

By consolidating University Avenue down to four lanes on its western side, its east side could be completely transformed with a symbiotic array of gathering spaces, multi-use trail and rehabilitated urban tree canopy. Guided by social equity, climate resilience, community well-being, growth and vitality, the plan represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a world-class new park space in the city core.

Team: Adam Nicklin, Marc Ryan and Mary Liston- Hicks with Lauren Abrahams, Ben Matthews, Luke van Tol, Avery Clarke, Tom Badger and Devin Tepleski (PUBLIC WORK); Alun Lloyd (BA Group); Jake Tobin Garrett (Park People); David Young and Nina Pesavento (Michael Young Foundation); and Geoff Cape (Evergreen)
