The new College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is sited alongside two heritage buildings, both over a century old. The weak link was, well, the link: a boxy 1980s stairwell. When designing the new college, Boston firm NADAAA decided to build out this interstitial space with an addition made primarily of mass timber. With its heroic diagonal beams and striking northern elevation clad in fibre-reinforced polymer, the architecture college is eminently worthy of its esteemed surroundings. Raked windows frame views onto both the football stadium and a local museum designed by legendary modernist Philip Johnson.
