With a spectrum of pastel hues, the ancient post-and-lintel wooden construction of a hanok (traditional Korean house) takes on a vibrant new form as the centrepiece of a reading room that’s home to more than 10,000 books in both Korean and English. Arranged in a looping configuration of shelving units, the design creates a “circulative space” around a central stone-tiled courtyard, encouraging interaction both inward toward the stools of the reading area and outward toward the views of a rooftop garden. Shelves and seating are crafted from wooden elements made of uniformly sized boards, which creates a consistent feel while minimizing construction waste and costs.
