l'atelier Nomadic Architecture Studio

Just as its name suggests, architect Pierre Escobar’s atelier has adopted a peripatetic ethos. It goes wherever it’s needed. In Berlin, l’atelier Nomadic Architecture Studio revamped the lobby of a learning institution into a multi-functional space with a strong graphic identity; in Paris, it “micro-mended” a small apartment for more flexibility and spaciousness. “Like nomadic tribes, we have hubs around the world. This nomadic identity is also part of a larger narrative,” the firm explains. At the crux of that narrative is creating better spaces in cities — whether they be private spaces for apartment dwellers or public spaces for everyone to enjoy. In the Bon Air neighbourhood in Anderlecht, Belgium, a formerly quiet residential area that had become a shortcut for cars, the studio re-established an outdoor respite with five thematic squares: a shaded grove, a green hill hub, a school plaza, a rainwater square and a community canopy. The area now abounds with colour and energy. It’s in keeping with the studio’s aim to focus on clients that align with its values, and on projects that ameliorate city conditions. “Our work is deeply rooted in the existing urban fabric…Architecture should prioritize re-using and reimagining what already exists.”
