The contrast between traditional industry and 21st-century technology that increasingly defines the Kitchener-Waterloo region inspired this three-storey installation in Perimeter Development Corporation’s new office lobby. Consisting of 8,000 coloured discs dangling ethereally from 650 cables, Binary Spectrum undulates gently in the air currents created by human activity nearby, constantly shifting and changing — much like the digital landscape created by Kitchener-Waterloo’s many resident tech companies. The discs’ colours, which morph gracefully from warm to cool as they rise, were also coordinated with the upholstered furniture beneath, in effect making the sitting area — and those using it — part of the installation.
