While this red brick Edwardian home in Toronto’s Annex looks much like its neighbours from the street, the interior of the Brar Residence reveals a sophisticated, light-filled design suited to the needs of a multi-generational family, including one member who uses a wheelchair. Built around a vertical core that houses an elevator, the stacked central staircase is flooded with light via a new dormer and skylight overhead. Working with the utmost sensitivity to the existing condition and to the clients’ needs, Omar Gandhi Architects preserved original details including stained-glass windows, wrought-iron grates and curved plaster ceilings while incorporating the home’s century-old millwork into a motif of ribbed white oak. More personal touches, like ground-level windows fitted with custom screens inspired by traditional Indo-Islamic architecture and textiles, pay homage to the family’s Punjabi heritage.
