The Buffalo Crossing Paul Albrechtsen Visitor Centre, the new gateway to FortWhyte Alive’s 267-hectare nature preserve in Winnipeg designed by Stantec Architecture, is on track to become Manitoba’s first commercial Passive House–certified building — a meaningful threshold in a climate where temperatures swing from minus-40 to plus-40°C. A compact triangular form, calibrated glazing with a 50 per cent solar heat gain coefficient and manually operated exterior screens balance winter solar harvesting against summer overheating. Inside, exposed FSC-certified mass timber sets a warm tone, while a star blanket terrazzo inlay by Indigenous artist Cheryl Wirch and a dedicated smudging and storytelling space embed reconciliation into the building’s everyday life.
