The newest version of Arper’s popular Catifa 53 earns extra points for sustainability thanks to a seat and back made of PaperShell, a 100 per cent bio-based and circular material derived from forestry waste. Using 29 layers of kraft paper bonded together with natural bio-resin, the form is steam-pressed, moulded and trimmed before being paired with one of four varieties of powder-coated steel legs. In addition to sequestering nearly two kilos of CO₂ per chair, each Catifa Carta can be sent back to Arper at the end of its life, where it will be turned into biochar, an eco-friendly fertilizer.
