Perched on a mezzanine with a view of the Waterworks Food Hall below, Civil Works is surprising for how intimate it feels given its bustling setting. The elevated interior embraces the art deco of the building as a major influence — but animates it with an eclectic mix of lighting and furnishings that sample many eras. Chrome stools, blue leather banquettes and lounge furniture come together to create a dynamic environment that can accommodate groups of various sizes. Much of the lighting, seating and accent furniture is, in fact, vintage, conjuring a cozy speakeasy feel. The building’s restored skylights offer illumination during the day, and are accentuated by the gentle glow of pendants that echo the large suspended art installations nearby.
