During its 140-year lifespan, which ended with its 2017 demolition, the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London, England, hosted everything from dog shows to Led Zeppelin concerts. With their Earls Court Masterplan, local firms Hawkins\ Brown and Studio Egret West propose filling the void with a bit of everything: urban gardens, a stepped fountain, a performance space, office buildings, and homes of all types for all income ranges. With its zero-carbon energy-sharing program and its stormwater re-use system, the development would be a model of sustainability. A site that was once synonymous with spectacle can now offer something better still: community.
