Internationalism collides with regionalism at Enso House II, a desert abode near San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. HW Studio envisioned the work as an homage to Mies, who once drew a home overtop a cruciform floor plan. The Enso House’s bisecting walls separate the property into quadrants: a garden, a shaded carport, a low-slung residence and a double-height office. But while the project is inspired by one of the fathers of international modernism, it has a clear sense of place. The chunky cantera stone is a local staple, and the sentinel-like office building evokes the ruins of nearby Mineral de Pozos, a 16th-century mining settlement.
