A light-filled circular atrium in the centre of Quebec City’s Gabrielle-Roy Library beckons visitors to three floors of stacks and quiet reading zones via a majestic staircase. Along the path, a wayfinding system designed by Montreal firm Agence Spatiale keeps navigation effortless. French keywords pair with universal symbols for multilingual legibility, and high-contrast black-and-white typography aids users who are visually impaired. A coloured translucent wall on each floor, overlaid with category and place names, is visible from the staircase at a glance for findability. Whenever a wall couldn’t accommodate fixed signage, such as in the case of the stacks, a folding system extends to guide movement.
