According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States sends almost 25,000 tonnes of textile waste to landfills every single day. It’s a staggering sum, and one that Luum Textiles is diligently working to reduce. First developed in 2020, the evolving Garment Waste Platform (GWP) utilizes recycled fibres to weave strikingly elegant upholstery.

The company sources its bales of discarded wool, acrylic, and polyester clothing from both pre- and post-consumer garment waste. These remnants are sorted by colour and content, then shredded and combined into a textured yarn. Luum’s selected yarn colours are then sent to New York City, where they are woven into a variety of structures and layouts, which become a testing ground for larger-scale production. So far, GWP encompasses four coordinating collections — Everyday Boucle, Melange Check, Wool Fleck, and Graph Speck, the latter three comprising exclusively recycled content.

The entire approach aims at circularity: The fibres are developed in partnership with a woman-owned mill and inspired by European recycling traditions. Their manufacturing process doesn’t require the use of additional dyes or water and is also free of PFAS, antimicrobials and FR finishes. Moreover, the dimensional colour interactions that emerge during the weaving process — and that produce a softer textile with a pleasantly woollen quality — have a lower environmental impact. The results are beautiful: While each of the four fabrics is distinct, these collections are elevated by a sense of depth and tactility, making for surprisingly rich and complex upholstery.
