In southeastern China, two traditional stone bridge typologies are disappearing from rural life: the baqiao, or “goose-chest bridge,” named for its spindle-shaped piers that recall a bird taking flight out of water, and the gaoqiao, or “bench-leg bridge,” with splayed stone posts that resemble a raised bench in profile. Both are commemorated by LUO studio in a bamboo grove with a “micro-museum” and truncated examples of each style, encouraging visitors to reflect on their craftsmanship while observing the view of a nearby heritage site, Shisanba Bridge. The museum’s architecture also reinterprets the baqiao, with a vertical concrete volume intersected by a timber one that resembles the bridge deck.
