For a pair of flagship stores in Shanghai’s historic Panlong Tiandi district — one for the brand Jisifang and another for its sister company, Woven Moonlight — local firm Neri&Hu Design and Research Office went back to basics. The Woven Moonlight store is in a pitched concrete sanctuary softened with walnut cabinetry and linen curtains. The Jisifang boutique is in a gabled oak cabin inserted into the larger concrete space — a building within a building. While the former evokes a prehistoric cave dwelling, the latter calls to mind philosopher Marc-Antoine Laugier’s “primitive hut,” humanity’s original building around which all other architecture is based.
