Positioned between Western Washington University’s main campus and the Sehome Hill Arboretum in Bellingham, Kaiser Borsari Hall by Seattle-based Perkins&Will is a PV-powered four-storey mass timber building housing electrical engineering, computer science and energy studies departments. As a higher education STEM building slated to achieve both Zero Carbon and Zero Energy certifications through the International Living Future Institute — a distinction that prompted Washington State to amend its funding legislation to recognize ILFI certifications alongside LEED — the project is already a great success. And its form is just as compelling: Charred Accoya wood siding, applied using the traditional shou sugi ban technique, clads the exterior, contrasting warmly with the exposed Douglas fir and CLT structure within.
