AZ Awards 2026 Winner in Architecture: Koffler Scientific Reserve

Tucked into a wooded area north of Toronto, a mass-timber facility clad in shou sugi ban cedar is a contemporary nod to the steep roofs and vertical siding of rural barns and stable blocks. Solar panels hint at the site’s energy efficiency but are a mere preview of the true environmental wonder that is the Koffler Scientific Reserve’s new Dining and Operations Centre: a net-zero-carbon, net-zero-energy work-study-live laboratory that’s pursuing LEED Gold certification.

The University of Toronto’s architectural marvel, completed by Montgomery Sisam Architects in July 2025, is ultimately designed to bring the outdoors in. Wrapping around a central quad, the 2,680-square-metre, U-shaped complex comprises three main “bars” (seasonal bunkies for summer researchers complement the main structure). The north bar contains the sleeping quarters; the east bar accommodates offices, a flexible classroom and a mudroom; and the south bar houses the communal living and dining spaces, including a generous hall and a lightfilled refectory.

“Such an elegant use of wood — so understated in the way it uses plywood as the finish material. I am really impressed with it.”

The hall and refectory celebrate their soaring, sloped ceilings — and the dynamic play of posts and beams that contrast against humble wall finishes like exposed wood, perforated gypsum board and plywood veneer — to magnificent effect. The interiors, overall, were given profound consideration. “An intentional interplay of macro and micro scales — echoing ecological principles — appears in the progression from bunk bed to bedroom to sleeping quarters to the great hall, and in the sinuous curve of the shower stall that recalls the amoeba familiar to researchers and so prevalent in water,” the architects explain. They elaborate their sentiment with a William Blake quote: “To see the world in a grain of sand / And heaven in a wild flower, / Hold infinity in the palm of your hand / And eternity in an hour.”

Sitting lightly on the land, and built directly onto the existing footprint of an old equestrian site with a cellulose-based insulated concrete form, the Koffler Scientific Reserve boasts numerous energy conservation and resilient landscape features. Among them: earth tubes that use the temperature of the surrounding soil to condition the air and a below-grade cistern that stores stormwater collected from roof runoff for re-use. And then there are the bioswales added to the grounds to manage stormwater and curb runoff — they extend the building’s environmental logic into the landscape it was built to study. This is architectural poetry.
