Love Park injects curves, colour and whimsy into the rectilinear concrete fortress of downtown Toronto. The space induces visitors to slow down and make themselves at home thanks to a wisteria-covered trellis that invites contemplation, a series of bronze animal sculptures that reward exploration and a set of movable furniture that conveys trust and a sense of public ownership. Perhaps the most charming symbol is the heart-shaped pond in the middle of the park, with its wraparound red mosaic seating and a central island home to a magnificent catalpa tree that’s long existed at the site.
