AZ Awards 2022 Finalist: Maison Saint-Charles by la Shed Architecture

With its interplay of bridges, overhangs and light wells, this infill property in Montreal’s storied Pointe-Saint-Charles neighbourhood is remarkably complex. Local firm la Shed Architecture designed the simple brick facade to evoke the carriage gates once ubiquitous in the region. The interiors, however, are surprisingly varied, consisting of five half-levels connected by a circulation column — an open-tread stairway surrounded by frosted glass. A skylight spanning the width of the property ensures that sun bathes the entire home, all the way down to the rugged concrete of the subterranean kitchen.
