In 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake hit the Bay Area and caused the deadly collapse of the Cypress Street Viaduct in Oakland. The State of California responded by burying regional overpasses, thereby liberating new lands. Using a shotcrete-pour technique, New York firm Field Operations recently filled in the space above seven lanes of highway tunnels adjacent to the Presidio, the northern tip of San Francisco. On this new platform, the architects created the Presidio Tunnel Tops, a rambling urban park with a transit centre, a café, bluffs, meadows, hiking trails, native plants and breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Team: James Corner, Richard Kennedy, Matt Grunbaum, Kerry Huang and Sahar Moin (Field Operations) with Jennifer Devlin (EHDD), Matt Jones (Magnusson Klemencic Associates), Jay Taylor (Magnusson Klemencic Associates), Richard Turner (Bay Area Horticulture), Tina Aghassian (HLB Lighting Design), Harj Sidhu (PAE Engineers), Jonas Houston (Holmes), Julie Vogel (Clearstory), Tom Yankelitis (Fluidity Design Consultants), David Pagano (d.d.
