Flexibility and simplicity are the watchwords at Sagamore North Cottage. Most of the house sits on a single horizontal plane, its common areas on one side and private bedrooms accessed by a skylit passageway on the other. Dramatic wraparound cantilevers extend the roof beyond the footprint of the house, and sliding glass doors enable the residents to expand the common rooms into the exterior overhang spaces. The hardy materials — black granite, hand-trowelled cement and plywood with biscuit joinery — give the space a rough-hewn, artisanal quality worthy of its woodsy surroundings.
