This retail store and gallery space for Japanese camera lens specialist Sigma has enough diffused light, sharp angles and contrasting textures to appeal to any photography buff, but its details are as symbolic as they are photogenic. Divided into three functional zones to represent the brand’s three guiding principles, it includes a raised gallery floor that evokes traditional Japanese architecture. Materials like deep blue wool upholstery, beige brick floor tiles and a circular display table with a sandstone base contrast with a three-metre-high metal wall displaying Sigma’s signature optics. In a particularly poetic touch, the display table’s sandstone pedestal offers a “snapshot” of fossils embedded within the stone and frozen in time.
