Neri&Hu’s undulating entertainment and meeting complex, located among a cluster of shiny new skyscrapers on the banks of the Huangpu River, boasts surprises at every curve. The Qiantan Cultural Center’s five-floor atrium is composed of coliseum-like layers of stacked arches, a motif that repeats throughout the lobby concourse in wood, concrete and stone. Convex balconies clad in dark wood give the 2,500-seat grand theatre an organic feel, balancing the rib-like structure of pale oak that makes up the room’s acoustic panels. Elsewhere, in a VIP lounge, perforated brick walls interplay with a wavy metallic ceiling, mirroring the energy and dynamism of China’s cultural nexus.
