Like a sculpture that forms the centrepiece of a room, this mass timber gallery and wine bar serves as a focal point for the main street of its Santa Clara County community. The structural properties of cross-laminated timber and glulam posts and beams allow for an open, airy interior complete with an exposed staircase that invites visitors toward the gallery space upstairs. Positioned to make maximum use of both natural light and hillside views, the building features exterior vertical battens that shield the interior from the California sun. After dark, the mix of stained wood and charred shou sugi ban siding creates a deep contrast with the warmly lit interior, turning the building into a glowing beacon.
