The Well, a mixed-use development on a three-hectare block in downtown Toronto, comprises seven mid- to high-rise buildings with multi-level retail and dining amenities at their bases. As the master planner of this ambitious project, Toronto firm Hariri Pontarini Architects was tasked with somehow knitting these disparate structures together into a cohesive whole. It envisioned a series of pedestrian laneways and promenades overhung by balconies and catwalks. Overtop is a stunning glass and steel canopy that undulates between the buildings and protects visitors from the elements. More than just a zone of real estate and commerce, the Well aspires to landmark status.
