The Tofino Fish Pier, from 1962 — an ice plant and salmon-processing facility made entirely of timber — is among the last of its type in British Columbia. It’s also an anachronism: The industry it supports is no longer active in the region. To give the pier a new life, Vancouver firm Leckie Studio Architecture + Design proposes restoring the substructure using steel and prefabricated creosote beams. In partnership with the Nuu-chah-nulth people, the firm also created a plan to revitalize the building with community-focused amenities: an exhibition space, a wet lab for marine research and workspaces for Indigenous-run start-ups.
