The contrast between natural materials and high craft that characterizes Japanese knives is reflected in the interior of Tojiro’s flagship gallery, which juxtaposes the organic texture of wood wool cement boards (a material that also provides soundproofing and humidity control) with an iron lattice grid housing a magnetic display system. With little to distract from the knives’ alluring forms, the blades themselves are the clear focus of the shop’s minimalist interior. Behind them, however, a window offers a view into a maintenance room where customers can observe Tojiro’s artisans at work sharpening and repairing, a reminder that skilled human hands are an essential part of the process.
