Set against dry grassland and rust-coloured rock face, the pale ochre walls of the Toronjos house read as part of the geology. Nearly the entire structure is adobe (a mud-brick commonly used in Mexican residences to absorb heat during the day) that was hand-mixed on site. Five large perimeter openings span the facade, aligned to apertures on the opposite wall for unbroken views of the mountains beyond. Toronjos appears to rise out of the earth, still lake waters mirroring the structure as part of the horizon. The water feeds into the site’s irrigation and underscores the relationship between built environment and land.
