Sturdiness coexists with flexibility at the Tramdepot Bern, a streetcar storehouse by Swiss design and engineering firm Penzel Valier. The 16,000-square-metre building stands without interior supports thanks to a complex system of beams, trusses and purlins. Despite the heroic flourishes, the garage looks lightweight, even graceful, with its glass and aluminum shell and its rows of entry ports that slide upward to let streetcars in and out. The repetitive, modular elements can be easily extended without changing the overall design program. The depot has already been enlarged once and will surely be expanded again as the municipality grows.

Team: Christian Penzel, Martin Valier, Niklaus Lohri and Tobias Schaer with Gino Guntli, Christel Erdmenger, Leonore Daum, Maic Neurauter, Jaffar Sabbah, Roland Schmed, Roland Siegel, Elmar Wenk, Balazs Kutas, Stephanie Weiss, Heinz Rempfler, Friedrich Tellbüscher
