As they near the Xiayanbei region of the Zhejiang Province in China, visitors pass beneath a tunnel on the road that heralds their arrival. Called Woven Passage to Cloudy Peaks, the tunnel — or conceptual gateway — looks, with its curved form and dusky slate cladding, like a rocky extension of the landscape. But the biggest surprises are on the inside, where the underlying structural system, a timber latticework, becomes visible to anybody travelling through. This interior feature is both functional and beautiful to behold — a celebration of the community’s long-standing bamboo-weaving traditions.
