Orchid Pavilion

Part greenhouse, part art installation, Orchid Pavilion was built for the non-profit Fundación Casa Wabi in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, as part of the group’s orchid conservation initiative. The flowers favour humid, shady environments that allow them to collect moisture from the surrounding air and soil, and this intervention provides the ideal conditions for endangered local species to thrive. A series of inverted pyramid-shaped concrete basins along the roof of the simple wooden structure acts as a gravity-fed drip irrigation system, channelling water down into concrete-based trays set on the pavilion’s floor. A slatted roof delivers the perfect combination of breeze and partial shade, as well as an inviting space in which to contemplate these plants’ rare beauty.
