Designed by 3XN as a landmark building, Forskaren, a Stockholm centre for health and life sciences, consists of eight ringed floors, each larger than the one below. Cutting through the full-height atrium is a spiral staircase that reaches, stem-like, toward a skylit oculus. Homey elements offset the high drama of the central area: The upper floors feature adaptable workspaces with shared labs, terraces and breakout rooms. The exterior of the building is clad in hardy timber fins set in a rhythmic pattern, and the interior floors feature wood panels and elegant Gotland stone. This calming, harmonious palette complements the structure’s adventurous form.

Team: Jan Ammundsen and Marie Hesseldahl with Christian Wamberg Rasmussen, Emelie Saltas, Jeppe Kongstad Hjorth, Lisa Kinnerud, Jonas Ersson, Mohammed Selander, Thomas Lund, Julie Rothman Pedersen, Moa Simå, Jens Bo Fjeldsted and Marie Liebhardt
