Designed by German architect Erik Behrens for a Canada–U.S. crossing between Windsor and Detroit, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is a feat of international collaboration that required navigating a variety of engineering codes andfour sets of regulations across the two countries. The wishbone-shaped towers on either side of the 2.5-kilometre-long bridge resemble a mirror image of Howe’s hockey stick mid-slapshot. Stay-cable arrays fan from the towers to the curved deck, creating a mesmerizing wavy pattern by day. By night, a light installation by Douglas Coupland augments the symmetry of what is now North America’s longest cable-stayed bridge.
