When clowns called the “Schmarchitects” showed up at local arts workshops to delight community members in a high-density, low income Toronto neighbourhood, they were only somewhat kidding around — the clowns were on a mission to get honest feedback for a design brief to transform the area’s beloved Mabelle Park into a multi-use hub. LGA Architectural Partners worked with the arts organization to get buy-in from the residents, favouring activities like lantern-making workshops over traditional consultation meetings. The seven-year collective effort translated into an asymmetrical, aluminum-shingled structure that’s as whimsical and unexpected as the arts nights and jam sessions it now holds.
