For 142 years, Indigenous children were forced to attend Ontario’s Mohawk Institute, a residential school that tore them from their families. The facility closed in 1970, but reopened in 2025 as a place of remembrance for survivors and visitors. WeatherstonBruer Associates worked with Indigenous leaders and former students to develop a seemingly simple yet carefully considered exhibit that mirrors the route children would take upon entering the school. Floating panels and silhouettes of children reflect these experiences while audio elements are on offer by choice — and a “pause room” ensures a quiet moment to breathe for survivors reliving their trauma.
