Evoking the magical allure of a full moon on a clear night, Rificolona instills interiors with a warm, atmospheric glow. This luminous effect is achieved through a unique material makeup: Created from recycled polyethylene that is mixed with a small amount of white powder and heated at a low temperature, the rotational-moulded shade has a semi-transparent finish and textural exterior that lends it a lunar-landscape quality. But unlike the moon, Rificolona can be touched and manipulated. Suspended from a graphic black cable with a special tilting mechanism, the shade can be positioned vertically, horizontally, or at any point in between to cast light where it’s needed.

While Rificolona makes a supernatural impression, its inspiration is more down-to-earth. With its lamp for Miniforms, Italian design studio E-ggs evokes the Florentine folk festival of the same name, which dates back to the 17th century. On the occasion of the Festa della Rificolona, or festival of paper lanterns, hundreds of farmers and peasants would converge on the city to celebrate the feast of the Virgin Mary and to sell their goods and wares, their children illuminating the way with colourful paper lanterns. Today, the festivities are more secular but no less enchanting: Dozens of glowing orbs conjure a captivating spectacle of light and colour each September.
With Rificolona (which also includes floor and desk lamp versions), E-ggs has done a brilliant job of translating the essence of this visual bounty into a singular and striking lamp — one that lends intrigue to any interior.
