Once the primary source of power for Edmonton’s growth, the decommissioned Rossdale Power Plant sits on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River on Treaty 6 territory — a site of Indigenous gathering long predating its industrial life. Calgary’s the marc boutin architectural collaborative (MBAC), in collaboration with Saucier + Perrotte and heritage conservation specialists DFS, proposes its transformation into a hub for cultural production: three theatre spaces, exhibition galleries and flexible community programming housed within the plant’s extraordinary existing volumes. New insertions including perforated aluminum theatre boxes and a channel glass office bar floating above are deliberately legible as autonomous objects within the heritage fabric. Given the scale of funding required, the project unfolds incrementally through a kit-of-parts approach.
