With the Yard, a cultural centre in the Chinese city of Dalian, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office presents an elegant solution to an inelegant problem. The suite of six aging buildings, varying in height and arranged in a semicircle, wasn’t exactly promising. Yet the firm intervened with a light touch, creating a single continuous structure, clad in weathering steel, that knits the buildings together and closes the semicircle off into a courtyard, which now has a rock garden at its centre. At The Yard | Dalian Cultural Center, cohesion coexists with variety, and freshness with decay.
