For most visitors, Sunnyside Beach begins at the water. For wheelchair users, it has traditionally ended at the sand. Hamilton-based Design HARU’s proposal addresses that gap with a considered sequence of moves. A prefabricated concrete washroom anchors the landside experience, its 5.5-square-metre volume lit by 16 integrated skylights beneath a vaulted ceiling. From its entrance, a 25-metre boardwalk of recycled HDPE lumber traces a smooth path across the sand to the water, where two submerged landings complete the journey: an Ashiyu foot bath platform at the shoreline and a four-square-metre octagonal guard-railed zone for bathing and swimming beyond. Pile foundations minimize ecological disturbance below ground; marine-grade stainless-steel guardrails handle the corrosive demands of the lakefront above.
