The ask behind the 16-kilometre Xili Lake Greenway in Shenzhen was a massive one: Revive the watershed, improveecological diversity, and cater to the recreational and cultural needs of 15 surrounding villages. Landscape architecture firm SWA Group overhauled drainage systems with purification ponds and sloped channels to capture and treat stormwater, introduced over 100 native species and pollinator-friendly plantings, and converted 77 hectares of wasteland into nine themed parks that encourage social play and provide access to 75,000 square metres of lychee forest. Two million people enjoyed the new greenway last year, a respite from — and for — a city of nearly 18 million.
